Why was it discontinued? I don't remember why? I also found this cute python script written for mystic that pulls from a CNN rss feed. Is there away to run a python script in synchronet? Can a python script be converted to javascript?? Do I want to? Should I even have an rss feed pulled on my BBS? Why not? Has a script like this ever written for Synchronet? Ok.. I'll shutup now. Any answers would be appreciated.

There used to be posts from "CNN Breaking News" and then "CNN News Alert" in DOVE-Net Debate, but this seems to have stopped back in January. I believe they originated as email messages (to an address mapped to the Debate sub on Vert). Maybe CNN discontinued or altered this service.

I made a thing years ago called web_feed_importer.js which I think is in the exec/ directory, if not in your installation then in CVS. I believe it still works with RSS or Atom feeds. I think there are some instructions at the top of the script; I don't remember documenting it anywhere else.

If RSS were more prevalent/relevant today I'd probably revise that thing, as I've recently gotten a better understanding of the XML parser available here, and there are some other things I'd make it do. Doubt if it's worth the time, but maybe I'll think about that.

That's so weird - I'm not sure what put me on the path of finding this out not more than 20 minutes ago, but a quick bit of hunting around for an RSS importer for Synchronet caused me to trip across "web_feed_importer.js".

So, yes, one exists. I haven't tried it, but it's got the documentation at the top part of the file.

They changed the format of their emails and my script wasn't converting them to readable plain-text very well, so I started just archiving the emails, to deal with later, and then sort of format. Now it seems I stopped receiving the emails about a year ago. <shrug>

Synchronet doesn't have any built-in support for Python. Depending on how the Python script works though, if the script just dumps an article to a file, perhaps a script could be written to read that file and post it on a Synchronet message sub-board. It sounds like that script is probably written for Mysitc though, so it probably wouldn't be quite that easy.

old information but rss IS old. I'm wondering why feeds on Synchronet have been abandoned? Even google dumped RSS. I can't remember why. I'd like to get everything I need in one place. It bothers me to have to go out to the web just to get the latest headlines. I couldn't get any of the scripts I found
working. Are rss feeds still in xml? Feeds were the craze back in 06-07. What happened? Smart Phones? I'm thinking about putting a disclaimer on my logon screen. "Whatever you're looking for it ain't here. It's on some damn app on the web. LOL

I saw Digital Man's reply where he said he was getting CNN emails and had a script to post them on Dove-Net, but they stopped coming in.

What do you mean by "Google dumped RSS"? I remember Google having an online RSS reader that they discontinued. Google seems to discontinue a lot of stuff that are semi-popular. Google Wave and Google Plus are a couple other high-profile things that Google discontinued.

You'd rather log into your BBS to get headlines? ;) I don't think that would necessarily be much simpler/easier.

RSS never went away. You can still use an RSS app and subscribe to RSS feeds if you want to.

I don't mind going to the web for news stories. Sometimes I visit digg.com for news stories. Late last year I finally created a Reddit account and have subscribed to some subs there for news. My Android phone also has an app called SmartNews that I actually kinda like for showing news from multiple categories.

Well I'll be...that js file is indeed there with instructions at the top. I think I will play with this sometime today.

Not sure what you mean by "feeds on Synchronet have been abandoned". We have modules for importing messages from an RSS feed, or exporting messages to an RSS feed. Nobody has asked for additional functionality that I can recall, or reported any bugs recently.

I agree with everthing you say but some Mystic boards have rss feed doors. I would like one for synchronet that's all. If I have to go to another BBS to reed an rss feed so be it. I don't have to like it. In fact I think it SUCS!
