• Avatar in Header?

From HusTler@VERT/HAVENS to All on Monday, June 03, 2019 09:30:51
Is there a way to insert some type of default avatar in the header locally? Let me explain. If a synchronet user chooses not to pick an avatar or if the message is from another BBS or network the avatar space is left blank. Is there away to put a "default avatar" if it's empty? Let's say the message originates from another network say fidonet. I would like to put a "doggie" avatar from all the messages from fidonet. Of course this would just be locally. Thanks.

That's not a current feature, but wouldn't be too hard to add. It sounds like you'd want a per-sub-default avatar or per-group-default avatar?

I think he wants something that would work for networked messages from users who don't have an account on his BBS (such as the FidoNet dog example he mentioned).

That's exactly what I mean, and since there is going to be avatars included with future versions of Synchronet, would it be too difficult to add an option like that to SCFG? Like say when creating a message Group/Area, have the option to "include" a "default avatar" for that group/area? The Sysop could chose one of the included Avatars and edit it or upload one? BBS users would see the "default avatar" or the users personal avatar.I Hope I'm making sense? I have no idea how much work would be involved and wouldn't want to take advantage of an already great BBS package. ;-)

Yes sir. Those are personal avatars. I was thinking of default avatars for Group Areas or Message Areas that don't permit avatars or are not synchronet boards.
As a SysOp I should have full control over what is seen on my own BBS. No?

Yes sir. Those are personal avatars. I was thinking of default avatars for Group Areas or Message Areas that don't permit avatars or are not synchronet boards.

I'd wonder if people might (at least initially) think the user actually chose that avatar, not realizing it's a default avatar for the message sub-board/group. The avatars were intended as a user-chosen representation of the user. But, some online message boards to have default avatars..

As a SysOp I should have full control over what is seen on my own BBS. No?

How far do you want to go with that? With the avatar chooser module/script, users can create their own avatar with it too (at least, that feature existed at one point). So you don't necessarily have full control over that. What if a user creates an avatar for themself that you don't like?

I don't want to mess with a users avatar. I want a "default" avatar message header for blank avatars. You're on Fsx. No Avatars right? So the all the headers are blank. If there was a "default avatar" for the message area when I set the are up I could use it.Let's say I shrunk down the Fsx Ansi down to 10 columns (just an example). I could use that as a "default avatar" for my Fsx Group (on My BBS). If someone was on my BBS and had there own avatar that's the avatar that would be displyed. Only posts and replies without avatars would display the "default avatar" it's wasted space.. why not use it. This
is only for SysOps using "stock" synchronet boards. Not SysOps that
mode their own headers.Fidonet, Fsxnet do not allow avatars. At least I would know what group I'm in at a glance if there was a "default avatar" for the group. This is all the SysOps choice. I think a lot of work has been done on the synchronet avatars. Why not utulize them? SysOps could make their own and use them. That's just my opnion.. I could be wrong...;-) Oh.. DDMsgReader would not be effected as far as I can see.

Create or find the avatar you want to use as a default. Note the avatar collection file (.bin file). Run the 'jsexec msg-default' command-line specified on that wiki page.
