All,

Are there any SysOps with experience with the USR Model 5633b external USB (black) modem in linux? I've been searching google for help but all the help is like 5 years old or older. There is no off/on switch and the modem only turns on when the driver is installed...

I don't have any experience with that particular modem, but a
quick Google search shows it to be what's known as a "Winmodem".
Not going to work with Linux. Save yourself the aggravation and
get something else. Nearly any *external* modem that uses a
normal serial cable (NOT USB) should work fine... I recommend the
USR Courier.

Oh that brought back memories! Winmodem - an attempt by manufacturers to save a few pennies when manufacturing under the assumption that everyone was using Windows based systems.

Fun times.

Yeah, what Dan said, your modem is Windows PnP only. Get an external USR Courier V.Everything, they are often on eBay for various prices, find one that comes with a serial cable, and make sure it's a real serial cable. I got a db-25 pin cable with a modem once, but it was just a 1-1 cable, took forever to realise the cable was the source of my woes.

model 3453c is what you want... here's one...

It wasn't until the USR5686* that external modems became Linux compatible, so, sorry to say, you are likely SOL :/ and even with those models 5886* and beyond you have to flash the firmware, which has been known to kill the modem.

FYI, Amazon has some decent USB modems are that Linux compatible.
