• Ansi Uploads??

From HusTler@VERT/HAVENS to All on Sunday, July 28, 2019 10:08:39
Is there a way to upload an ANSI to the editor in Synchronet? I've recently noticed none of the editors have that option. If the SysOp allows ANSI what is the proper way to upload an ANSI to BBS Ads in Dovenet. It's a piece of cake on other boards I use.

It might depend on the editor you're using. I have a feeling what you might need is some kind of online ANSI editor that can post messages.. I think most editors I've used on a BBS don't really handle ANSI.

That's true, you might just be able to copy & paste the ANSI.. though, if the editor does line wrapping (or even if it doesn't), it might not get saved correctly in order for it to be displayed correctly.

There is "the editor", but anyway, you can use raw input mode to raw/ascii-upoload an ANSI as a message. Hit Ctrl-Z to enter raw input mode before posting your message and Ctrl-Z to stop the upload (and exit raw input mode).

    I've recently
noticed none of the editors have that option.

Some might. I don't now what editors you're referring to. When using "raw input mode", you avoid the use of an editor altogether.

If the SysOp allows ANSI what
is the proper way to upload an ANSI to BBS Ads in Dovenet. It's a piece of cake on other boards I use.

Yeah, piece of cake on Synchronet too.

Most message editors don't take too kindly to pasting ANSI escape sequences.

This thread gave me an idea though. I think it would be possible for a message editor to have an "upload" option, where someone could upload a file to be posted instead of typing in the message. I was thinking of adding that to SlyEdit, though offhand I don't remember if you can initiate a file upload via JavaScript..

I'm not sure what you think a "back door" is, but it's not the same as an undocumented or poorly
    documented feature.

People have explained the raw input mode to you, and you didn't even need to read any docs to get your
answer. Is raw input not working? Did you use that feature when posting your advertisement earlier in a
    reply to DM?

This may seem like a crucial and obvious feature to you, but I can't remember the last time anyone
brought it up, so it's clearly not a priority for everyone. Maybe request a feature instead of being
indignant and incredulous that it doesn't already exist.

Perhaps Nightfox will add an upload feature to his editor soon, and maybe it'll help you.

I think that is very strange an ANSI-BBS "don't handle" Ansi Screens. For those interested Mystic does an exellent job of posting Ansi and is very user friendly. Simply upload and post. --- Synchronet 3.17c-Linux NewsLink 1.110

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "don't handle". From what I remember, I thought Synchronet had an area where ANSI screens could be posted and viewed. Also, Digital Man has shared a way to upload ANSI screens to Synchronet.

if you are a sysop you can also use smbutil.

The BBS "handles" (displays) "Ansi Screens" just fine. You just don't know what you're doing.

That may be but it's good to know I can get the job done on a Mystic BBS. I don't have the time to play around with "back doors" or reading 20 years of Docmentation for something that should be easy even for a novice SysOp.

why are you putting back doors in quotes? there are no back doors in synchronet.
and whats wrong with the documentation? synchronet's docs are better than most bbs softwares.

if you want to run something different than synchronet use net2bbs with netfoss and run an older dos bbs. mystic is a piece of shit

Is there a way to upload an ANSI to the editor in Synchronet?

There is "the editor", but anyway, you can use raw input mode to raw/ascii-upoload an ANSI as a message. Hit Ctrl-Z to enter raw input mode before posting your message and Ctrl-Z to stop the upload (and exit raw input mode).

i've done it before but i just did it the other day with a few and they are getting mangled. there's nothing funny about them and they arent too wide.

Looks like an issue with word-wrap. Disabling word-wrap (Ctrl-Z) shows the ANSI content fine. It's an easy fix in the code.

Was there a reason you sent me an ANSI?

did i send you one or post it in the msg base

You posted on DoveNet addressed to me.

i was testing a raw upload of an ansi file.
it's not working correctly anymore and it's mangling the file.

I tested it. It was actually the *display* of the message that was mangling it (with word-wrap), not the posting/saving of the message. Raw I/O mode avoided the issue, but I also changed the code to detect ANSI-encoded messages and not word-wrap the text.

No. It was actually the *display* of your ANSI which was mangling it, but that was a relatively new bug and has been fixed. Thanks for the report!

Ctrl-Z is displayed on the Control-Key menu (Ctrl-K), which is listed on the main menu. To make full use of the BBS, learning all the available options would help you.

It depends on your terminal program. For SyncTERM, for example, you hit Alt-U (for upload) then select "Raw" or "ASCII" and it'll let you choose the file. If the file doesn't already end with a Ctrl-Z, then you'll need to type a Ctrl-Z to tell the BBS that you're done sending the file.

I did the Ctrl-Z and it said raw mode was toggled ON, and then after the message subject it's sitting there waiting for me to do something... How do you paste/upload the message text you want to input? Thanks.

Some terminals have an "ASCII upload" or "upload text file" feature, which should do the trick.

If you're using Syncterm hit Alt-U and then select the ansi. If you use another term find out what keys it uses to upload.

or maybe just use the normal OS copy'n'pasta functions if one's terminal doesn't actively thwart them like some terminals do by intercepting them and forcing their own menu or hotkey method...

It depends on your terminal program. For SyncTERM, for example,
you hit Alt-U (for upload) then select "Raw" or "ASCII" and it'll
let you choose the file. If the file doesn't already end with a
Ctrl-Z, then you'll need to type a Ctrl-Z to tell the BBS that
    you're done sending the file.

Perfect, thanks. Sometimes the obvious things right in front of
us are hard to see... :-)

Yeah, you really have to idiot proof the system, don't you? ;) Brings back memories of writing software at uni and all the weird corner cases you had to check for. ;)

My team at work has brought in a team of security experts a couple times to check for security issues in our code. They were always able to find something..

ansi bbs is it not? That's it and that' all. As DM said "You don't know what your doing" well that might be but I know I can post my Ansi's on Mystic BBS which is all I'm concered with right now.

I post mine via QWK mail posts and I think they turn out ok.

I've been known to find obscure bugs, because I tend to think out of the box and try things that the developer never intended - usually more often creative and finctional, rather than malicious, but it's just they never imagined their code being used in that way. :)

Sometimes copy and paste may not work as intended, but yeah it is worth a try. Of course, after the ASCII upload, you probably still have to manually save the message. It will then pay to know your editor! :)

I think that is very strange an ANSI-BBS "don't handle" Ansi Screens.
those interested Mystic does an exellent job of posting Ansi and is
very user friendly. Simply upload and post.

it was like that with synchronet but i think there might be a bug. anyways, mystic is inferior to synchronet. it doesnt even have its o fossil. ---

I didn't say Mystic was better BBS software. I'm just saying Mystic handles posting BBS ads better and much easier. The option to upload to t editor is built in. Just upload the ansi to the editor and post it and yo done. And the Ansi looks exactly like the one you created. The hidden ctr option in Synchronet mangles my ansi.

No. It was actually the *display* of your ANSI which was mangling it, but th

Ctrl-Z is displayed on the Control-Key menu (Ctrl-K), which is listed on the
