• C64 connect but width not good, how to correct?

From Hawkeye@VERT/MASHBBS to All on Monday, April 15, 2019 13:08:45
Hi fellow synchronet bbs users :)

I connected via my C64 to my 3.17 BBS but the screen did not fit the width, which is ofcourse due to the fact the C64 only supports 40 columns. Is there a way to give these callers a 'normal' readable bbs? I was hoping it detected the client and served a 40 column version of the BBS.

    Any help is appreciated.

Not completely sure this will fix your issue, but have a look
    here: http://wiki.synchro.net/custom:menu_files

Under the second table on that page there, it mentions using the
".Xcol.ext" naming convention for menu files, perhaps something
like "main.X40.asc" would work, if the BBS auto-detects that the
caller is using a 40-col terminal. Worth trying, anyway.

I did some work on this last year. Connect to Vertrauen (telnet to TCP port 64 at vert.synchro.net) to see examples. There are now
default menus for 40 columns users and a lot of text.dat changes to accomodate them. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than
it used to be. Check it out!

    That's along the right track.

One problem is that a CBM terminal won't (normally) support ANSI, so the BBS can't auto-detect the screen width accurately. There
is a work-around for this however, the PET40Port value in the [sbbs] section of the ctrl/sbbs.ini file. The default is 64 (TCP port
    64) - so that means if you have your telnet server listening on TCP port 64 (e.g. in addition to port 23), the CBM/C64 users can
connect to that port and they will be auto-detected as PETSCII users at 40 columns.
