• Reparations

Is anyone (on here) in favor of reparations for descendants of slaves?

My thoughts on that are this: I didn't enslave anyone, so I'm not interested
in paying any reparations, unless they want to get to work on my laundry
right now. Will black people foot the bill for this also? I mean, not all
black Americans are descendants of slaves, but many are. So are we going to
pay them based on their skin color? $100/month for full black, $50/month for mulatto? If you get paid to be black, then I'm working in the wrong field.

What if I can't afford my restitution? Will I be subject to
fines/imprisonment, similar to the child support system? Now all black people are going to become my children, through the eyes of my paycheck.

Not going to take it out of white paychecks & direct deposit into black paychecks? Going to take large funds out of the budget instead? Great!
America just became a lousy place for non-blacks to live. Will native
americans be subject to the black tax also?

    Here's another closely related question:

I'm a democratic candidate running for president, and I need like all of the black votes. How do I get em? How can I use them all as tools, and then disappoint them later by not delivering results?

right now. Will black people foot the bill for this also? I mean, not all black Americans are descendants of slaves, but many are.

There is some proof that some free blacks also had slaves, just as there is proof that many voluntarily fought for the South.

    Here's another closely related question:

I'm a democratic candidate running for president, and I need like all of the black votes. How do I get em? How can I use them all as tools, and then disappoint them later by not delivering results?

Well, the Democrats already take most of them for granted. Back in the
1960's, being the party of racial segregation was not working so well for
them. So, they shed their public prejudices (and nickname of "Dixiecrats") in favor of beefed-up social programs and handouts aimed mostly at innercity citizens (many of whom were black). In other words, instead of keeping
the poor and minorities down by force, they'd keep them down by keeping them
on the government dole. The added benefit here is legal vote buying.

Since then, they have pretty much taken for granted that they will get most
of the minority votes, black or otherwise, simply by buying them with
handouts. They do not take into account that some folks (minority or otherwise) really don't need the freebies and are actually quite good at working and thinking for themselves. However, the Democrats hope (through proper training in public schools) is that most of us won't be able to think for ourselves and that they can continue to take many of us for granted by promising more handouts... like free college tuition for that always in
    demand liberal arts degree.

In short, I don't think you have to do much of anything in the general election, other than run as a Democrat, to pick up as many of the votes of
the government dependents as you want... black or white or any... provided
that the majority of them don't start thinking for themselves.

Now, in the primaries, I guess you have to be the one who promises the most freebies while talking the most trash about Trump... even if someone else
gets nominated on that side, your measuring stick in 2020 will be Trump and
    how much you hate him.

    Hello Aaron,

Is anyone (on here) in favor of reparations for descendants of slaves?

    Raising hand.

My thoughts on that are this: I didn't enslave anyone, so I'm not interested
in paying any reparations, unless they want to get to work on my laundry right now.

They were people, forcibly taken from their homelands, and then
treated like cattle to do the bidding for their new "owners".
These people, living in a land far from home, treated like animals
(or worse), and not even considered human, with no laws to protect
them. These are the very people who helped build this country,
including the very building that the Congress uses to write
    the laws!

Most of our presidents, up until the Civil War, owned slaves.
And in those days, slaves did as they were told. Those who acted
up found out very quickly not to do so a second time.

The owners could literally do whatever they wanted with their
possessions. They could whip `em, fuck `em, chop `em into pieces,
    whatever they felt like doing.

This country does not have enough revenue to pay enough reparations
to fix the wrongs that have been done.

But it could apologize, and at least pay a generous amount to show
it's sincerity. After all, this country did apologize and pay
reparations to Japanese Americans who were forcibly interned during
    WWII.

Will black people foot the bill for this also?

Only those who are not African American. Such as Barack Obama.

I mean, not all black Americans are descendants of slaves, but many are.

We all owe Michelle Obama an apology, and reparations.
And also a great deal of gratitude for Barack Obama for
    having served as our president.

So are we going to pay them based on their skin color?

Like Sweet Tea, Southerners always preferred their slaves dark.

$100/month for full black, $50/month for mulatto? If you get paid to be
black, then I'm working in the wrong field.

The city of New Orleans had many free people of color, who
were not slaves, and mostly mulatto. The state of Louisiana
as a whole had lots of slaves, usually darker than those
    in New Orleans.

There were slaves not only in the South, but also in the North.
It was an issue the Framers of the Constution would not, or could
not, address. Like an open wound, it continued to fester. But
that was not the real cause of division that sparked a war.

What if I can't afford my restitution? Will I be subject to >fines/imprisonment, similar to the child support system?

Not at all. The way to pay for this project is to soak the rich.

Now all black people are going to become my children, through the eyes of my
    paycheck.

Only those who can afford to pay. Those who are unable to do
    so get an automatic exemption.

Not going to take it out of white paychecks & direct deposit into black
paychecks? Going to take large funds out of the budget instead? Great! America just became a lousy place for non-blacks to live. Will native americans be subject to the black tax also?

No, no, no, no! You don't understand! Everything ought to be free! Everything! And I mean EVERYTHING!

    Here's another closely related question:

I'm a democratic candidate running for president, and I need like all of the
black votes. How do I get em?

The easiest way is to buy them.

How can I use them all as tools, and then disappoint them later by not
    delivering results?

You can also lie to them.
Just be sure you never tell them that.
Until after you have gotten their vote.

Although I assume this to be correct, those people who believe that adter 150+ years they still can draw rights from that period, should be entitled to a free
one-way ticket to Liberia or Sierra Leone, two countries that were set-up for the return of former slaves and their dependants to Africa.

Another tactic seems to be keeping businesses down. Alexandria
Cortez doesn't want Amazon in NY, and Gov Cuomo says he disagrees with her,
but yet instead of taking his own initiatives he attacks hers'.

In a world of rubber stamps, free college tuition, free medicare for all, we don't really care if thousands of high paying jobs are scrapped, do we?
Because there's just no votes if we make good on any promises of improving
    the economy or cutting debt.

Too many people don't pay attention to what the politicians say. They listen

Yes, as funny as that is, I think you're right. From what I understand,
every major is covered at the state's colleges & universities. A liberal arts degree would be better than nothing, but what's that going to do for the student or for any community, other than give it a huge debt?

They were people, forcibly taken from their homelands, and then
treated like cattle to do the bidding for their new "owners".

Everyone has been victimized by the government in one way or another; why not focus on government-mistakes more recent & relevant than slavery? Who's in office right now cracking that slavery whip?

The government used to allow lead paint for residential use; should
descendants of lead paint victims sue the government?

How will it feel for a white guy like me to knock on a black person's porch with a check in my hand saying "I'm sorry for the slavery! I think you should have this money because someone with the same skin color as me enslaved your ancestor."

    We're suing ourselves.

Will descendants be exempt from the slave-tax? Will we (the plantation
owners) be paying for the millions of DNA tests that will need to be examined to prove descendant-ship?

Slavery is to blame for any economic problem any descendant is suffering from right now.

The government didn't have insurance to cover this type of lawsuit back then, so if it costs too much to pay all these reparations, do we just smack the rubber against the paper?

This is disrespectful to the actual slaves in many layers. Most strikingly,
it will persuade many descendants in the the voting booth. How heroic will
a democrat be in their tv commercial when they say "I voted in favor of reparations, but we're not done yet! Vote for me and we'll give you some
more reparations! This will never be over!"Brand recognition is powerful..

If there's not enough money for this effort, we can enslave the whites for an equal number of years as the other slaves were enslaved. That's kinda what we're doing here anyway; on a smaller scale.

But it could apologize, and at least pay a generous amount to show

Why apologize for something you didn't do? A bad cop killed an innocent man today. 200 years from now, can descendants of that innocent man sue the
police department, if it still exists?

South Carolina's 34th Regiment was the first black unit to fight in the
War of Northern Aggression. The north didn't start recruiting blacks
until whites quit volunteering, and kept its black soldiers in
segregated units with white officers until 1948, when President Truman desegregated the army (the navy did not segregate its black and white sailors).

Note that northern carpetbaggers didn't believe that free blacks owned property or businesses in the south and confiscated them right along

If you got that liberal arts degree only wanting a job in that field and no others, that is where you get in trouble. I honestly have never felt that

Thousands of high paying jobs at Amazon, what would that be?
At least 1,000 jobs working diretly for Amazon in Queens, NY, and at

Doing what? Retrieving stuff from the warehouse, putting it in cardboard boxes,

Is anyone (on here) in favor of reparations for descendants of slaves

That is a hard question, as it would be difficult to define which country would receive such reparations, and the governments that supported

You have a valid point! Elizabeth Warren HATES valid points.

someplace - even the most rabid racists almost undoubtedly have a
black - or Jewish - ancestor someplace in their family tree.

The most rabid racists are often 99% black.

Actually, blacks were enslaved by other blacks, who then sold their slaves to white slave traders

I know, but my point is - how will this affect race relations? In some US cities race relations are pretty calm, with nobody having big issues with
other colors. But other cities have bad race relations, where people are
forced to stick to their own skin color.

I can see the reparations stirring up problems in the peaceful cities and in the racist ones.

I'm afraid that once the reparations start getting paid, shame will follow all the white people. Instead of being "just some guy" to the "ancestors," I will be "just some white guy who owes me something."

Cortez doesn't want Amazon in NY, and Gov Cuomo says he disagrees with her, but yet instead of taking his own initiatives he attacks hers'.
In a world of rubber stamps, free college tuition, free medicare for
all, we don't really care if thousands of high paying jobs are scrapped,

Thousands of high paying jobs at Amazon, what would that be?

Thousands of high paying jobs at Amazon, what would that be?

At least 1,000 jobs working diretly for Amazon in Queens, NY, and at least 1,000 other jobs created as a result. But like I said, who cares? We don't
need jobs; we need stuff like "Basic Income." Working is some sick thing that conservatives do.

Although I assume this to be correct, those people who believe that adter 150+ >years they still can draw rights from that period, should be entitled to a free
one-way ticket to Liberia or Sierra Leone, two countries that were set-up for >the return of former slaves and their dependants to Africa.

A lot of Americans do not know that.

Just imagine ... the Hawaiians are also going to file claims and every other minority in the USA...

It would be a dangerous precident indeed. What few Native Americans are
left, IMHO, would have the biggest complaint.
