I think one of the first things that could be done is to reduce the number sysop echoes; some seem absolutely redundant, others ambiguous, and many ju plain dead. Plus, isn't most everyone left on Fidonet a sysop?

This I agree with totally; but then everyone squabbles over who gets to be the moderator. Its the flies fighting over who gets the best piece of dog shit.

The new Sysop echo ends up getting listed on some questionable Echolist and whoever is moderator is now the king of the castle. Because even though the role of a moderator in most echoes is almost completely unnecessary today,
its a "role", a hat, a keyboard-warriors' dream job. Even when that echo is long dead; that moderator will be tenacious enough to keep posting rules to show the world that yes, its still out there like Jodie Foster listening for aliens in Contact.

Thats all that ever gets discussed. And every month, we will get a "rules" post or statistics that nobody asked for, nobody cares to read, nobody's enjoyment of the hobby in 2019 is substantially elevated to heights
of nirvana by being told to watch your potty mouth or else.

This goes on and on and turns into a huge pointless troll-fest. Then someone gets the bright idea to create a new Sysop echo where "none of that
    negativity is gonna happen anymore".

That echo lasts for a few months, then the cycle repeats.

So make it a random drawing; everyone gets an equal chance. Or simply
leave the echo unmoderated. Maybe someone goes all sour-grapes about it and delists the echo from their region, but surely the majority of folks aren't
so petty, and the echo would carry on all the better without the rancor.

    Just a thought :-)

Not a good analogy. I've seen plenty of dog shit, but I don't think I've ever seen flies "fight". There is usually plenty for everyone. They probably call their buddies over to the buffet. :)
