This is something ViaMail puts in automatically. I have no control over
this. From my understanding, the author has teken up support of it as well as development and runs a POTS line to his BBS again.

THanks for the reply. I am now working on getting the BBS to send
properly to the mailer. PCBoard and FrontDoor. I changed something and
cannot figure out what is wrong. :( I have ways around it to get it to
send but it takes a manual task or two.

The original purpose for BBS's was MESSAGE areas, but I can't see
having a "dead network". The BBS Ad echoes have numerous postings of the same ad multiple times per day, not just per week. I post my ad once a month. I want folks to logon to my system because they want to, and NOT because they have to. Being that the BBS is one of the few hobbies I can still do, I'm not concerned if I don't have a bunch of users logging on.
I do it for my enjoyment...and not for my ego.

Daryl, I would imagine most of us are here for this reason. Other than that one
guy that brags he gets 50 calls a day, we're all pretty damn quiet.

ahhh... EEST == MSK at this point in time... cool...

FWIW: i originally wrote moscow time because i have moscow as one of the time zones i look at when i hover over my system's clock... there are a few streamers that i watch on a regular basis that are on moscow time... looking at the time tables that pops up when i hover over my clock makes it easy to see what the local time is for the places i have selected to be listed...

Accident or intent, I consider it wrong. The ASCII specification reserves the values 00-1F as control codes, not printable characters. Using any ASCII control codes other than 00, 01, 0A or 0D in the text part of Fidonet messages may result in unpredictable behaviour. Even in an environment where it results in a printable character, one can not be sure what image it will display. It may look very different on a non IBM clone...

I recommend using Unicode codepoint U+1F3B5

MvdV>> The ASCII specification reserves the values 00-1F as control

They do not. Not in the ASCII specification: http://ascii-table.com/

No printable glyphs in the range 00-1F. Only documented control codes. The "musical note" as you call it, is hex 0E, documented as SO or Shift Out.

At best these glyphs are an undocumented feature of the original IBM PC. Ask IBM why they did that.

MvdV>> Using any ASCII control codes other than 00, 01, 0A or 0D in the

The world is not static, things change. Many things that looked like a good idea 30+ years ago turn out to be not such good ideas today. I too have used undocumented features 30+ years ago before I heard of Fidonet. With the coming of Fidonet came the realisation that using undocumentd features locally on one's own system or even in a private network is one thing. But...

Using undocumented features in a global network is bad practise for the simple reason that you never know what it will do at the other end.

I almost always login with plain old telnet or ssh and when I do that with MBSE my terminal changes into a graphics mode that makes it impossible to read anthing on the screen after that musical note character. The only way to get the terminal back to normal is to type "reset" at the command prompt.

That used to happen with Synchronet also but I just logged into Vertrauen and had a read through this area and I could see that musical note just fine and it didn't change my terminal at all so I think newer versions of Synchronet protect against that happening.

I don't know if it's the musical note or a control character or a combination of those. It doesn't bother golded at all but it doesn't display the musical note, just an x.

    Ttyl :-),

Your terminal going into another mode is complient with the original meaning of "Shift Out".

The only way to get the terminal back to normal is to type "reset" at
    the command prompt.

The acompanying code for SO is SI, Shift In. You may get your terminal back into text mode by typing control O.

I don't know if it's the musical note or a control character or a combination of those.

What appears on some screens as a musical note IS a control character. I repeat: bad idea to use that in the text part of a Fidonet message.

I believe to be sufficient that the reader is able to read CP437.

Every old mail reader does that.

It has nothing to do with CP437 or whatever codepage setting. The musical note (hex 0E) is not part of CP437 or any other character encoding systen in use in Fidonet. It is an undocumented feature of some hardware/software combinations that some control codes (hex 00-1F) are displayed as printable characters,

The use of undocumented features in a world wide network is bad practise.

NICE! Am going out to do some maintenance on the TaoTao...then going to come back to work on setting up something in DOS under the hacked version of
DOSBox. If I can get that working as a test...may just setup FreeDOS on the Lenovo to run TG/RG & such if I don't run into the same issues I was getting

You should get a respond if your message "test" is to "All",
    not to "all". ;)

the bot really should be agnostic, tho... especally since not all systems erroneously(?) force certain uses of case in some fields...

"Should"? I am not aware of any standard covering this. Correct me if I am wrong.

especally since not all systems erroneously(?) force certain uses of
    case in some fields...

That is not the problem of the bot I's say. It is as Tommy says, if you want a response, adrress to "All". Lacking a binding standard, it is up to the bot's maker to set the rules...

Yes, seems easy to make it case insensitive.

one of the things i was speaking of, yes... some software will force the to/from fields to all caps or proper case... other more enlightened software will leave things as the writer wrote it...

software forcing its idea of name case is just wrong...

eg: one's name contains "van der" but software forces it to "Van Der" which may be triggering to some...
