    Hi everyone,

I upgraded my license to Extra class yesterday. Wasn't easy but I'm proud
of myself that I did it. I'll be operating as KD5COL/AE for a week or so
until the FCC database catches up.

I have the book in a drawer here. Have to clean off the mouse turds though SD>(damn field mice are invading my shed). I should go ahead and study that SD>while I have the time.

    For ARRL/VEC, it's a 40 question open book, untimed exam...you fill it
out at your leisure...2 hours, 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months, etc. None of
this filling it out, and you hear "STOP!! PUT YOUR PENCIL DOWN!!", as

I downloaded the manual in PDF format (a new version is to come out
this summer), looked at the question, went to the index, and found what
I needed. I later went back, and read the entire manual, though. There
are a couple you have to think about, but it's common sense.

Yet, you'd think after having done over 200 sessions since October,

the test. I know it's not the right way but it's the best way. Though now, looking over some of the questions, I have been looking up the explanation behind the answers.

I read the "How to Become a Radio Amateur" book, in the late 1950's, before
I took the Written Test for the Novice, Technician and General Class ticket.

I can't remember how many Questions and Answers were in that book, probably more than the 50 Questions on the Written Test(s) that I took.

But memorizing what I read, let me get the Ham Radio License I was trying to get.

[the first time I took the CW Test for General, I didn't pass so I couldn't
take the Written portion that day]

"The Radio Amateur's Handbook" and the "Radio Handbook" and other Books can help You learn about what those puzzling questions mean.

I took the Amateur Extra Test once, Passed the CW part, Flunked the Written part, and left the room with Temporary Authorization added to My Call ID to
use the Advanced portion of the Amateur Radio airways.

I remember questions about Satellite Operation and one about "how to Modulate
a Triode in a UHF Transmitter" were on that Written Test, You probably saw
some questions like those, didn't You?

If I took the Extra Test again I probably would flunk again because of some questions like those two.

But whats a LID to do?

    73,
    Sean KD5COL

I see that You got the printed License now and lost the /AE ( -..-. .- . )
    part of Your Call ID.

Now YOU have access to ALL OF the Ham Frequencies I could use as a General before the Part 97 Rules changed where a General (or Conditional) Class Ham couldn't operate on some Segments of the HF Bands anymore.

Congratulations Again, Glad You passed the exam.

Here is the URL I found yesterday but haven't went to it yet.

    https://support.microsoft.com/help/4500705

I remember the link is for XP when I copied and saved the URL yesterday in
a text file I use here to help me remember web pages I want to visit.

I saved some pages I looked at yesterday.

This page talks about the URL I wrote above:

The page is titled - A Reminder to Update Your Systems to Prevent a Worm

I had to split the URL:

    https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/msrc/2019/05/30/a-reminder-to-update- your-system-to-prevent-a-worm/

It's still on my ROUNDTUIT list to get done.

I didn't know about Bluekeep until a few days ago.

The URL I gave Daryl says May 14 is when CVE-2019-0708 was released by Microsoft.

    Ed,

I have been reading about Bluekeep and found a download page from Microsoft. EV>I haven't went there yet, I want to read up some more about it.

Well, once the weather calms down here (it has been a very stormy
spring), I'm going to do a backup on all 3 computers, and install
Windows 10 Pro. I'll be offline for awhile, especially for all the
updates. The ending of support and security updates for Windows 7 is the
    ONLY reason I'm upgrading.

I'm trying to learn how to block TCP Port 3389 on my Linksys router.

There's probably a utility to take care of that, but I think unless
you actually set it up, like in port forwarding, it won't allow it.

    Ed,

I remember the link is for XP when I copied and saved the URL yesterday in EV>a text file I use here to help me remember web pages I want to visit.

I quit using XP when I upgraded to Windows 7. The same will apply when
I start using Windows 10, and quit using Windows 7. Again, the ONLY
reason I'm upgrading is because of the security issues. That will take a
LONG TIME TO FINISH, once the main software is installed.

I have the IObit Product Suite, which includes:

    1) IObit Malware Fighter -- it has an anti-malware and anti-spyware
engine, an anti-ransomware engine, and the "bit defender" engine. It is automatically updated daily. I scan any new downloads with it.

    2) Driver Booster -- it checks and updates all the drivers on the
system, to make them up to date.

    3) Smart Defrag -- it defragments and optimizes the hard drive.

    4) Uninstaller -- it removes unwanted programs.

    5) Software Updater -- checks for new versions of installed programs.

    6) Advanced System Care -- several options including:

    A. Startup Optimization -- speeds up boot-up.
    B. Privacy Sweep -- deletes cookies from the browser.
    C. Junk File Clean -- deletes junk and temporary files
    D. Shortcut Fix -- fixes invalid shortcuts.
    E. Registry Clean -- removes invalid registry entries.
    F. Spyware Removal -- similar to IObit Malware Fighter.
    G. Internet Boost -- Speeds up ones internet connection.
    H. System Optimization -- Speeds up system performance by closing down
    unneeded applications (user configurable).
    I. Registry Defrag -- Defragments items in the registry.
    J. Security Reinforce -- Reduces System weaknesses to prevent hacking.
    K. Vulnerability Fix -- Security Updates from Microsoft are installed.
    L. Disk Optimization -- Similar to SmartDefrag.

With most all of these, you can get a good price to cover 3 computers
for one year. Full details are at www.iobit.com

In the past, for virus scanners, I've used McAfee, F-Prot, CA Internet Security, and Sophos...but I like the IOBit Product suite the best.

I upgraded several years ago mostly so I could be more valuable as a volunteer examiner (VE). As a General, I was only able to grade Technician Class exams. As an Amateur Extra Class, I can grade all class exams. Belive it or not, I haven't used my Extra Class priviliges yet... Mostly due to the fact that I
do not have any HF antennas up yet, and we have lived here for three years (July 29).

I haven't used mine yet either really. Am going to spend $50 on a new base for my Mosley RV-4C vertical (10-40 meters w/80 meter coil) and hopefully will get back on the air. I did the open-book ARRL VE "review" and mailed it into them a couple of weeks ago and am waiting to hear back from them. I figure being a VE can't hurt anything and just something else to put a notch in my ham radio belt with.

I am selling my Yaesu FT-450D due to finances but still have my IC-706MKII to get on the air with.
