    Hello everybody!

Is there any mechanism in Synchronet for users to /IGNORE or
filter messages from other users? I'd suspect there are lots of
situations in which a user many not want to see messages from
certain people. For example, if certain person is annoying or
unreasonable, but not enough to warrant asking a sysop for a
    ban.

Are you talking about ignoring chat messages from other nodes, or messages posted on the sub-board? If it's messages from other nodes, Synchronet allows users to toggle whether to allow paging, which I think toggles whether they can
be bothered by chat messages from other nodes. It has been a while since I used it though.

There's also the twit list, but that amounts to the sysop putting a ban in place, which you said isn't enough..

As as a BBS user I don't know of a way you could block users without asking the SysOp when using a Synchronet BBS. As a SysOp I wouldn't feel comfortable with that but I see what your getting at. You mean like how you can block certain email addresses in some email programs? Now that I think of it. That should be an option in a BBS reader. That would be a personal preference or setting. It would only work on the BBS you set it up on. Maybe you could make a request and the programmers could add a "block user option". I'm not a programmer so I don't know. It sounds like a good topic for discussion though. ;-)

I was thinking about ignoring messages in a sub-board.

Do you want User A to be able to ignore User B in Sub-Board A while still seeing their messages in Sub-Board B? Or do you want User A to be able to globally ignore User B (not see any messages User B posts in any sub-board)?

Actual user case that prompted me to ask this question:

Unhelpful answer: if you're going to read a "Politics" discussion board anywhere on the internet, you'd better be ready to eat some shit. :D

Could be useful, if used sparingly - and better if it's left in the user's hands rather than affecting everyone on the BBS.

This could be implemented by individual message readers, but probably best if done by the BBS itself so that it just works everywhere (terminal, web, NNTP, etc.)

Ideally you would have filtering capabilities like those in the
TIN nntp client. For those who are not familiar with it, you
decide who to ignore and where. Maybe the guy who is telling you
about his feet in General has awesoem things to say in Firearms.

That said, more often than not, if some user is a time waster it
is usually better to /IGNORE him globally.

I know, I know. In fact the main reason to read those groups is
to have fun with the flamewars. But some users are not god as
either debaters or trolls, which imo makes them boring and
    /IGNOREable.

Hey DM, do you have a country blocking system in Synchronet like Mystic does?

Hey DM, do you have a country blocking system in Synchronet like Mystic does?

You can block hostnames, like *.ru, in text/host.can or IP address ranges using
wildcards and CIDR (<IP>/<prefixlength>) notation in text/ip.can. So effectively, yes.

I was doing some research and found out these remailers are not completely untraceable. Which is good news.

Good to hear because I want to block these bozos who are aggravating me on
    here.

you can only block them on YOUR system when you get one set up... but the thing
is, why do you think they'll be coming to your system? if someone were really after you, you could end up blocking most all of the 'net depending on how resourceful they are... they're only doing it because they see it gets a rise out of you...

just ignore them and hit the next key... don't respond at all...

they're not supposed to be untracable... their purpose is to anonymize the poster's identity... anonymous remailers have been around since the '90s... they do a good job for what their intended purpose is...

Well maybe if you actually ever run Synchronet you'll be able to
    do that.
