From Hemo@1:103/705 to All on Saturday, May 04, 2019 11:42:00
okay.. weird issue and looking for ideas/pointers on what might be happening or where I could start looking.

I will logon to my BBS and will get a message that someone has sent me email.

Scanning all messages areas will not find or show this email.

Press E on the main menu to enter the Electronic Mail Menu and then choosing R or U will only show me the message " You have no mail "

If I download a QWK packet, these emails will appear and I can read and reply to them. The area shown in the QWK reader as area # 0, and the forum name is "E-mail"

Any ideas where I can look to figure out why the system is unable to show me emails unless I donwload a QWK packet?

Email is not stored in sub-boards. A "scan" is not going to show you your email.

Press E on the main menu to enter the Electronic Mail Menu and then choosing R or U will only show me the message " You have no mail "

Then perhaps you already downloaded and deleted the email, perhps using POP3 or
    QWK?

If I download a QWK packet, these emails will appear and I can read and reply to them. The area shown in the QWK reader as area # 0, and the forum name is "E-mail"

That's the same message area you access with the 'R' command from the Email menu. You can also use the ;MAIL sysop command to read *all* email on the system or use the smbutil from the command-line.

Any ideas where I can look to figure out why the system is unable to show me emails unless I donwload a QWK packet?

It might be helpful if you set SCFG->Message Options->Users Can View Deleted Messages to "Yes" or "Sysops Only". My guess is that the messages has been marked for deletion and you can't see it because that option is set to "No". Why was it marked for deletion? Probably because you downloaded it via QWK or POP3 - but that's just a guess.

okay, I sort of suspected that. Thanks for the confirmation.

Then perhaps you already downloaded and deleted the email, perhps using POP3 or QWK?

At this point, I have not. I have not used POP3, and did not use QWK to download. Hmmm... what about the pre-pack QWK thing? Could that be triggering this behavior?

If I download a QWK packet, these emails will appear and I can read

I do have SCFG->Message Options->Users Can View Deleted Messages set to Sysops Only.

I'm jumping back to my previous thought regarding SCFG->Message Options->Pre-pack QWK Requirements, I have this set to LEVEL 50, so I am wondering if the system has pre-packed the QWK and marked the emails for deletion... but then the other configuration should still let me see those emails, yes?

;MAIL also shows no emails, though I have no unread at this time that I know of, but was thinking it should still show those.

What _is_ the sysop - just the account with user # 1 and access 99? Maybe I don't have my 'sysop' account correct, so while I have sysop access with security level, the code doesn't really think I am the sysop ?

    thanks,

Absolutely. If you have the QWK settings on your account to "delete after pack", then yes, the email would be deleted after it was pre-packed.

I do have SCFG->Message Options->Users Can View Deleted Messages set to Sysops Only.

Only for a period of time. Messages marked for deletion get permanently removed
when message base maintenance is run (email is usually nightly).

;MAIL also shows no emails, though I have no unread at this time that I know of, but was thinking it should still show those.

If you don't have any mail on your system, then I suppose the ;MAIL command would say so. If you're not a sysop, then the ;MAIL command would do *nothing*.

And... confirmed. Thanks. I actually went into this area and found these settings just prior to reading your reply. So many options.

Only for a period of time. Messages marked for deletion get permanently removed when message base maintenance is run (email is usually

And that would cover everything else I was about to ask. Thanks for direction and confirmations. Much appreciated.
